Double your donation

Employee matching gift programs are a type of corporate giving. Each corporation or employer decides if they want to match the donations given by their employees to qualified nonprofits. They also decide how they want to participate, including if there is a limit on the amount they will match, the time of year they will match, and any other criteria.

Here’s an example: Let’s say you work for Company A. You donate $100 to Mosaic Vermont, and then you enter your company in the search bar on this page. Company A does participate in the program, and they will fully match any donation over $50, which means your donation is eligible. After you follow the simple prompts in your search results, Company A will send us a check for $100. You’ve doubled your donation!

Keep in mind that all or most employer matching gift programs run by the calendar year. In other words, an employer will consider the total amount of your charitable giving in that year to determine if it’s eligible to be matched.

First, thank you for being a monthly donor! If you haven’t yet, be sure to enter your employer in the search tool to see if they participate in a matching gifts program. If they do, there are a few ways you can submit your request to have your donations matched.

Option 1. (Recommended) Submit your matching gift request to your employer at the end of each year. Some employers will only match donations that have already been made, rather than donations that are planned. Submitting your request at the end of each year makes it easier for your employer to verify your total giving for that year. For example, let’s say you give $20 each month. Your employer will only match gifts of $100 or more, and will not match anticipated gifts. By submitting your request once at the end of the year, your employer can verify that your total giving of $240 met the matching gift eligibility. To help make this easier, Mosaic will send a reminder email in early December to all of our monthly donors!

Option 2. Submit your request multiple times through the year. You may also choose to submit your donation match request every month, or every quarter. Just keep in mind that your employer’s matching gift rules may affect whether your gift is eligible or not. Using the example above, if you give $20 a month and your employer will only match gifts of $100 or more, a request to match your first three months of giving ($60) will likely not be accepted.

Option 3. Submit your request when you make your first donation. At the beginning of the year or at the time of your first donation, you may choose to submit your anticipated donation amount for the year and ask your employer to match it. Be sure to check the elibility criteria for your employer’s matching program – some employers will match pledges, or anticipated gifts, and some employers will not.

Yes, it’s not too late! Many companies will allow employees to submit match requests for one year following the date of donation. Simply enter your employer in the search bar and follow the instructions in your results. 

Your company may still match your gift. Double the Donation is always updating the database of employers but it’s possible this information hasn’t been added yet. You can always ask your HR manager if your company will match your gift!
